Artist Statement

My work stems from my identity and culture as a Mexican American. Growing up in America I was taught to be ashamed of my roots. Kids used to laugh at me for bringing beans to school. Life was hard. I grew up poor and I like to use motif of hardship and struggle to describe fragmented memories of my childhood.

This work is from my BFA Thesis show in 2020 which examines the historical figurine (The Sleeping Mexican) for it's early interpretations to present meanings.

This is an exploration piece done in soft sculpture about the vices we use to help cope and bring comfort.
